Essex County Turtle Back Zoo
From the smallest spider to the half-ton North American Bison in the Great Plains Exhibit, Essex County Turtle Back Zoo offers a look at more than 100 different species of native and exotic animals from five continents. Visit the newest members of our animal family – our Masai Giraffes in the African Adventure Exhibit, get up close and personal with our animals at our Essex Farm Petting Zoo, and don’t forget to take a tranquil ride through Essex County South Mountain Reservation on our miniature train. Turtle Back Zoo is a special place where children and their families can learn about animals and gain appreciation for nature.
Located within the Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex, McLoone's Boathouse sits on the banks of the reservoir, showcasing spectacular views. McLoone's Boathouse features a semi-private dining area with a walk-in fireplace that is perfect parties, corporate functions or other special events.
Once the private home of industrial magnate Charles Walter Nichols, Pleasantdale Château is now the most exclusive, private and sought-after venue for weddings, private social events and corporate meetings in the tri-state area. Nichols toured Europe seeking Norman-style buildings for inspiration that would shape the design of what is now Pleasantdale Château. The Château is situated on 40 acres of woodlands, meadows, manicured gardens and ponds. It is the only venue of its kind that offers the privacy that business leaders require for retreats, meetings and even industry summits. The Grand Ballroom, a spectacular event space, is unique in its self-supporting octagonal design and its English Georgian architectural style.
