Overview

Welcome to VLS 2019, a visual litter survey of New Jersey’s waterways, including beaches, rivers, lakes and streams, streets leading to waterways, and/or storm drains. Our purpose is to identify types and amounts of litter, develop solutions to the litter problems, and ultimately reduce litter.

Community organizations, business, individuals, and Clean Communities coordinators are invited to participate now through December 31, 2019. Participants must adhere to the Guidelines. Coordinators may earn re-certification credits. Data collected will be submitted to Ocean Conservancy as part of the International Coastal Cleanup. Registration is required.

In addition, Environmental Resources Planning will conduct a visual litter survey of New Jersey’s waterways with support from Ocean Conservancy. This survey will consist of 94 sites representing a variety of waterways throughout the state and is being funded by the NJ Department of Transportation and the American Chemical Council. A report will be released in 2020.
